 ords Central is on Victoria or the main road. The Lords Central has incorporated three well-known bungalows, David Cottage, Jacob Lodge and Khorshed Lodge. The Lords Stores next to these is the only real café you can find where dances are held and is otherwise the ‘rendezvous of the elite’ as Mumbai (Bombay) hoteliers like to describe their place.
Young Naval Lord was responsible for introducing dancing into Matheran institutions, by holding hotel dances and also installing a loudspeaker system to provide their patrons with gramophone music. However, when the band was around the two hardly blended.
Naval Lord was the eldest of the three sons of Hormusji Lord. Hormusji was the one who opened a small shop at the same spot where the store still is. He did so well that he was later able to open a hotel. |

He and his sons were always ready to rush to anyone’s help and naval further had the gift of the gab, which made him the most popular of the three. Cowas is his son.
Out of the other two brothers, Framrose who had branched out on his own with the present Lords Hotel is deceased but Shiavax happily is still there running the Lords Central Hotel. He was a professional photographer at first, one of the best on the hill, but is faring far better now in the family calling where he so well deserves to be.
Shiavaxs’ son Jamshed or Jimmy as he is popularly known took up the mantle. Later, Jimmy’s son, also called shiavax after a stint at the IHMCTAN, returned to the hotel and is now running the place along with his father Jimmy. Constant additions to the facilities and amenities have made the hotel today the first choice of the discerning traveller.
Unlike the other hotels in Matheran that cater to the nouveau riche of Mumbai, Lords Central still has an old world atmosphere and attracts the best of clientele.
The Lord Family has run Lords Central Mountain and Valley Resort for four generations.. Jimmy grew up in the hotel and his close association with the hospitality industry in india coupled with a masters degree in hospitality management from england has made him one of the first hospitality professionals in india. Shiavax on the other hand is one of the new professionals, college trained and eager to make changes, improve facilities and services. Zenobia is one of those amazing hostesses who are completely at home whether entertaining 4 guests or 40. Together they bring to Lords Central 3 different but complimentary experiences in running what is matherans oldest and best hotel. |
